More than one kind of model

Why this speaker matters
The question is not only which model wins. It is how companies turn their own knowledge into useful AI.

Relevant context
Businesses do not have to announce layoffs for automation to affect employment. Alibaba's leadership has described needing fewer new hires as AI improves efficiency; Amazon's automation plans illustrate the possibility of increasing sales without a matching increase in staff. The immediate effect may therefore be fewer openings rather than fewer employees. That still matters to people trying to enter or change careers.
Who they are
Satya Nadella became Microsoft’s CEO in 2014 after leading its Cloud and Enterprise group. He joined in 1992 and held roles across both consumer and business products. His tenure has included a broader embrace of Linux and open-source software, the acquisitions of LinkedIn and GitHub, and the company’s partnership with OpenAI. He is also Microsoft’s chairman.
What they are working on
Nadella’s responsibilities span the cloud infrastructure developers rent and the workplace software companies buy. Microsoft’s recent Copilot work brings multiple models into coding and office tasks. That connects a long-running platform strategy—serve developers, businesses and their employees—to the question of how AI changes the software itself.
And so, to me, that's what's going to happen. To me, a model is like the database market. It's got its own differences, but I sort of somehow think that there are definitely going to be frontier models that are closed source. There are going to be open source models that are going to be frontier class. In fact, if anything, I think in this next year, what will be probably a big part of the discussion is, what's the future of a firm? A firm should be able to take the tacit knowledge it has and embed it inside a weight in a model that they control.Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on AI's Business Revolution: What Happens to SaaS, OpenAI, and Microsoft? | LIVE from Davos ↗

Yeah, it's definitely made our operations more efficient, so we actually don't have to hire as many people. And my point is not that Amazon isn't seeking ways to improve its operating leverage and avoid hiring more people. Obviously, they are. But the headlines that this has been turned into are so exaggerated and salacious. And the point is, they don't say in this article that they are even going to be cutting jobs. They're simply planning to double their sales volume over this time period and hoping to not have to double their workforce.NBA Gambling Scandal, Tesla Trillion Dollar Vote, Billionaire Tax, Amazon Robots, AWS Outage ↗

I see that as an early stage investor in Founding University. I see it every day. Hold on, let me finish please, gentlemen. People are pitching me on startups and they're getting funded for these startups to specifically replace roles. And they're saying, we want to make the perfect sales development rep. We want to make the perfect customer support agent. And enterprise customers are agreeing with them and buying these products and services specifically to stop hiring and increasing their headcount. I see it on the front lines. It is definitely happening.
