CEO, Boom Supersonic

Blake Scholl.

From software startups to supersonic aircraft and engines.

Why this speaker matters

For a physical technology, a promising prototype and a dependable commercial service are different milestones.

Topics to listen for

Relevant context

Certification is part of the product

Overture has to become more than a fast aircraft design. Manufacturing, engine performance, certification, airline operations and cost all have to work together before a prototype becomes a dependable passenger service.

Relevant context

Power generation changes the financing story

Boom says its Superpower turbine uses the same engine-core technology as Symphony and that power revenue could help finance Overture. That creates a concrete link between data-center demand and aviation, while announced orders remain different from delivered equipment.

Questions worth asking

  1. What still needs to be demonstrated before a technical milestone becomes a reliable service?
  2. How do energy, manufacturing and operating costs change the economics at scale?

Who they are

Blake Scholl founded Boom Supersonic in 2014 after a career in software. He worked at Amazon and co-founded Kima Labs, which Groupon acquired in 2012. Boom is developing the Overture passenger aircraft and Symphony engine. Its work tackles the return of commercial supersonic travel after Concorde, rather than a faster version of an existing airline service.

What they are working on

One engine program, two intended markets.

Boom’s Superpower natural-gas turbine draws on the same engine-core technology as Symphony. In December 2025, Boom announced Crusoe as its launch customer and said power-generation revenue would help finance Overture’s certification and delivery. That creates a specific link between aviation and data-center power; announced orders remain distinct from delivered equipment.
