The question
Would Chinese AI leadership be purely harmful?
America’s economic base could erode
China’s manufacturing and energy scale already pressure physical production; open AI could extend that competition into software, research and intellectual property. Friedberg’s concern is that the United States may lose insulation in knowledge services after allowing substantial manufacturing capacity to migrate abroad.

This is a directional concern, not a quantified estimate of trade, employment or output effects.
So as I look at China, historically it's been about this manufacturing base, this energy production capacity, right? I often reference they're on their way to eight terawatt of electricity production. We're kind of sitting around one, hovering around one, finding it very hard to get to two by 2040 So China's got this massive amount of energy that they can use to power electrified things. They've got 20 times the manufacturing square footage as the US and much of it is automated. But now with AI and open sourcing AI, not only is China kind of dampening the capacity to compete in manufacturing, making molecules, making pharmaceuticals, making materials. Now we're seeing them effectively eliminate the capacity to compete in knowledge services and IP.Rahm Emanuel: Trump's Foreign Policy, China, Europe's Decline, Immigration & DSA vs Democrats ↗

Consumers could gain while workers lose
Calacanis argued that Chinese breakthroughs could make advanced products cheaper and more accessible to Americans rather than remaining exclusive to China. The offsetting harm would be domestic job and income losses. This rejects a purely national-loss framing while preserving a serious distributional problem.

The argument is illustrative and does not establish how benefits or job losses would be distributed.
Well, I was just going to add to this. We already know what would happen with AGI, Friedberg. Because your original question of trying to explain to Americans what happens when China wins, we already know what happens when they win. Products get cheaper and you get more access to them. If they solve cancer, what are they going to do with that solution? They're going to just keep it for themselves? No, they're going to sell it to Americans, just like they sell phones cheaper, just like they sell cars cheaper and we try to block them. And then what Americans are going to do, we're going to lose our jobs to them.Dario Defends Himself, Datacenter Panic, AI Doomer Trap, Senate Toss-Up ↗
